Ingredients

  • 1 block (14-16 oz) extra-firm or super-firm tofu
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch (for tofu coating)
  • 2 tablespoons neutral oil (like avocado or vegetable oil)
  • 1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated (or 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger)
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar (optional, for brightness)
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch (for sauce thickening)
  • 2 tablespoons water (for cornstarch slurry)
  • Optional garnishes: sesame seeds, chopped green onions

Instructions

  1. Press the tofu: Remove tofu from package and drain. Wrap in a few layers of paper towels or a clean kitchen towel. Place a heavy object (like a cast iron skillet or a few cans) on top for at least 30 minutes, or up to 2 hours, to remove excess water. This step is crucial for crispy tofu!
  2. Prepare the tofu: Once pressed, unwrap the tofu and cut it into 1-inch cubes. In a medium bowl, toss the tofu cubes with 2 tablespoons of cornstarch until evenly coated. This helps create a crispy exterior.
  3. Cook the tofu: Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a large non-stick skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the coated tofu in a single layer, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan (cook in batches if necessary). Cook for 5-7 minutes, turning occasionally, until all sides are golden brown and crispy. Remove the crispy tofu from the skillet and set aside on a plate.
  4. Make the honey garlic sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, honey, minced garlic, grated ginger, and rice vinegar (if using). In a separate tiny bowl, whisk 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of water to create a slurry.
  5. Thicken the sauce: Reduce the heat to medium-low on the same skillet (no need to clean). Pour the honey garlic mixture into the skillet. Bring to a gentle simmer, then slowly whisk in the cornstarch slurry. Continue to whisk gently as the sauce thickens, about 1-2 minutes, until it reaches your desired consistency.
  6. Combine and serve: Add the crispy tofu back into the skillet with the thickened sauce. Gently toss the tofu until each piece is thoroughly coated in the delicious honey garlic glaze. Remove from heat.
  7. Garnish and enjoy: Serve immediately over steamed rice or your favorite noodles, garnished with sesame seeds and chopped green onions if desired. Enjoy your amazing Honey Garlic Tofu!
