Ingredients
- 2 cups cooked short-grain Japanese rice (warm, freshly cooked preferred)
- 1 (5 oz) can tuna in water or oil, drained very well
- 2-3 tablespoons Japanese mayonnaise (Kewpie preferred)
- 1 teaspoon soy sauce
- Pinch of salt (for seasoning hands/rice)
- Optional: 1/4 teaspoon sesame oil (for tuna filling)
- 2-3 sheets nori (roasted seaweed), cut into strips or small rectangles
- Water (for wetting hands)
Instructions
- Prepare the Tuna Filling: In a small bowl, combine the thoroughly drained tuna, mayonnaise, soy sauce, and optional sesame oil. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly incorporated and creamy.
- Prepare Your Hands: Lightly wet your hands with water and sprinkle a pinch of salt onto your palms. This prevents the rice from sticking and lightly seasons the onigiri.
- Form the Onigiri: Take about 1/2 cup of warm cooked rice and gently flatten it in one palm, creating a slight indentation in the center.
- Add Filling: Place 1-2 tablespoons of the prepared tuna mixture into the indentation.
- Cover and Shape: Add another 1/4 cup of rice over the filling, gently pressing it down to cover the tuna completely. Carefully bring your hands together and press the rice into your desired shape (traditionally a triangle, but a ball or cylinder works too), gently squeezing and rotating to ensure it holds together firmly.
- Repeat: Continue the process with the remaining rice and tuna filling.
- Wrap with Nori: Once shaped, wrap each onigiri with a strip or small rectangle of nori seaweed. The nori helps with handling and adds a delicious umami flavor.
- Serve Immediately: Enjoy your freshly made tuna onigiri as a delightful snack, light lunch, or a tasty addition to a bento box!
